Richard L Hoffman

1936 - 2019

 

 

Richard L Hoffman, Mazeppa, died March 11, 2019 at Rosewood Rehabilitation Center in Schuylkill Haven.  He was born May 18,1936 in Sipesville, PA to the late Park L and Hazel L Hoffman.  He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nancy Kling Hoffman, and three children; son Jeffrey and Robin Hoffman and their children, Megan and Andy Coppock and Bethany  and Zach Sierra and their children, Cosy and Teddy; son David and Mitzi Hoffman and their children Dustin and Laurie Hoffman and their daughter Quinn, and Beau and Brette Hoffman; and daughter Jocelyn and Mark Cogen and their children Alyssa Cogen and her partner Satchel Kaplan-Allen and Rebecca Cogen.  He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and good friends.  Dick was preceded in death by three brothers; William, James and Larry.

Dick grew up in West Milton playing on the West Milton/Newky little league baseball team and was in the first little league world series.  He was a 1954 graduate of Milton High School.  After 2 years at Bloomsburg University, Dick was accepted into the US Naval Air Cadet program and trained in Pensacola, FL and Beeville, TX.  He received his wings and was commissioned into the US Marine Corps.  He was assigned to the 2nd Marine Corps Air Station in Cherry Point, NC.  Dick had two Mediterranean carrier cruises.  He was proud of the fact that all the pilots of his Squadron VMA 225 completed their 100th carrier landing on the same day.  Dick was assigned to the first nuclear aircraft carrier, the Enterprise, during the Cuban Crisis.  After achieving his Top Gun designation and a tour in Japan, he was a flight instructor at Kingsville, TX.  Dick completed his career with 30 years flying for American Airlines.

Dick enjoyed his retirement with his family, mowing the yard and fishing on Bob’s Lake at his cabin in Ontario.  He was active in many organizations: Trinity Lutheran Church, Meals On Wheels, Milton Class of 1954 reunion committee, American Legion Post 71, RATS racquetball and Mazeppa Tech reunion committee.

Friends and relatives will be received on Friday, March 15, 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM and on Saturday from 12:00 to 1:00 at the Trinity Lutheran Church 100 Mahoning St. Milton.  Funeral services will begin at 1:00 with Rev Mark Galbraith officiating.  Burial with military honors will follow in Church Hill Cemetery, Lewisburg.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Abiding Memorial Fund at Trinity Lutheran Church, 100 Mahoning St., Milton, PA 17847.
