John M. “Duke” Heimbach

1925 - 2019

 

 

John M. “Duke” Heimbach, 93, formerly of Sunset Dr. Milton and for the past three years Cedar Crest in Riverwoods where he was provided much care and love, passed away on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.

Born in Kingston on December 29, 1925, a son of the late John “Dewey” and Florence (Lewis) Heimbach.  He was married to the former Emma Hope Covany until her death in 2017 just 2 days prior to their 68th anniversary.

John attended Milton Schools and had served in the US Navy from 1942 to 1945 on the USS Kasaan Bay, a Casablanca Class Escort Carrier.

He was a member of St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, Milton where he taught Sunday School.  He faithfully attended Sunday services while a resident of Riverwoods.

After returning from his military service he had a Gerber Baby food route, with his wife he owned and operated one of the largest food stands at the Bloomsburg Fair, and had retired from Weis Markets in Milton where he was Produce Manager.

John enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.  He enjoyed going to Knoebel’s, traveling to the shore, Florida and Niagara Falls.

He is survived by daughter and son in law Joann and Frederick Davis of Wallingford; two sons and daughters in law John and Nancy Heimbach of Lairdsville, and Allen and Janice Heimbach of Milton; five grandchildren Andrea, Bridget, Christie, Allen and Kaitlyn; two great grandchildren and a step son and daughter in law Harry and Linda Balliet and their family of Northumberland.

In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by a sister June; and a brother George.

Friends and relatives will be received on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Shaw Funeral Home 400 N. Front St. Milton.  Funeral services will begin at 6:00 with the Rev Kate Morse, Riverwoods Chaplain officiating.  Military honors will be offered at the end of the funeral service.
